Train to Teach with NPCAT: Inspiring Teachers, Transforming Lives

Our Mission

To form dedicated, compassionate, and skilled teachers rooted in the Catholic faith, who are committed to making Christ known and loved through their vocation. We prepare educators to serve diverse communities with dignity, inclusion, and a deep sense of purpose.

Our Vision

To inspire and equip the next generation of teachers to lead with love, promote excellence in learning, and make a lasting difference, especially to the most vulnerable. In partnership with families, parishes, and communities, we foster a culture of faith, service, and continual growth.

Why Train to Teach with NPCAT?

NPCAT offers a school-centred Initial Teacher Education (ITE) programme, learn on the job, supported by outstanding professionals in our family of Catholic schools across York, North Yorkshire and Teesside.

Whether you’re a recent graduate or seeking a career change, our approach blends practical experience with academic rigour:

  • School-Centred Training: Learn in a school close to home with guidance from a committed mentor.
  • Gradual Development: Start by observing, then move to co-teaching, and eventually lead your own lessons with ongoing support.
  • Proven Outcomes: Many of our trainee teachers go on to take up permanent roles within NPCAT.

Our Accrediting University Partners

1. University of York

The University of York offers PGCE Primary (5–11) and PGCE Secondary (11–16 with Post-16 enhancement) routes.

Their approach is deeply research-informed, ensuring trainees emerge as passionately committed, professionally ready, and highly effective teachers.

Through the Lead Partner ITE, trainees benefit from a blend of university-based academic sessions and extensive school placements, with quality assured and closely guided by both university and trust staff.

2. York St John University via Polaris Teaching Alliance

In partnership with Polaris Teaching Alliance, York St John delivers school-centred PGCE training, particularly in Primary and Early Years teacher education.

This model places trainees in classrooms from the very first week, with up to 80% timetable involvement by the end of the year.

Trainees receive dual support, from expert school mentors and academic tutors at York St John, within a network of local schools including both Catholic and non-Catholic institutions.

3. Leeds Trinity University

Leeds Trinity, a Catholic-founded and values-driven institution, offers a one-year full-time PGCE that leads to both Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and a Level 7 Postgraduate Certificate in Education.

They offer multiple training models:

  • Lead Partner: Delivered collaboratively by local schools and the university.
  • Delivery Partner: School-based, with the university curriculum coordinated by lead school staff.

Their PGCE Primary includes both 3–7 and 5–11 routes, both qualifying trainees to teach across the full primary age range, and supported by a strong Learning, Teaching, and Assessment Strategy focusing on inclusion, employability, digital literacy, and personalised support.

What Trainees Will Experience

  • A supportive and nurturing school placement, embedded in an NPCAT school within your community.
  • A structured progression, from shadowing expert practitioners to gradually leading full lessons, supported by experienced mentors.
  • Access to academic training and reflection, shaped by the strengths of University of York, York St John via Polaris, or Leeds Trinity University.
  • A supportive, professional development environment designed to prepare you fully for teaching and likely future employment within NPCAT.

Your Journey Starts Here

Be part of something extraordinary. NPCAT is committed to developing teachers who lead with faith, excellence and compassion. Our school-centred ITE programme, backed by three exceptional accreditation providers, offers a meaningful and effective path into teaching.

Start your journey with NPCAT and shape the future with heart and with purpose.

🌸 Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary 🌸

Today, we celebrate Mary being taken, body and soul, into Heaven - a sign of hope and the promise of eternal life for all who follow Christ. 🙏✨

Mary’s Assumption reminds us to lift our hearts to God, trust in His plan and live with faith, hope and love. Let us honour her example of humility and obedience as we strive to walk closer with Jesus each day. 💛

“Hail Mary, full of grace… pray for us now and at the hour of our death.”
