UNICEF Award For Middlesbrough School

5th March 2020Michael McGeary

A Middlesbrough school has earned praise from the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) after being judged worthy of receiving the coveted Silver award for respecting children’s rights.

St Augustine’s Catholic Primary in Coulby Newham was commended for embedding the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child throughout its policies, practice and culture.

Headteacher Martin Macaulay said: “Student voice has always been strong in the school, but our Year 6 teacher Joanne Nicholson, supported by all the staff, has taken this to another level by engaging with UNICEF’s Rights Respecting Awards.

“They have provided a way of drawing student voice groups such as the Student Council, Anti-Bullying Ambassadors, the Chaplaincy Team and the Mini Vinnies all together under the umbrella of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

“The convention has 54 articles and so many relate directly to our children’s everyday lives. They understand how simple things such as playground behaviour and attendance link to the right to play and the right to an education, as well as how our safeguarding arrangements link to the right to be protected from harm and to be safe online.

“Other articles relate more to global issues and our pupils have learned about children throughout the world who don’t have the opportunity to have an education because of poverty or having to go out to work.”

St Augustine’s Catholic Primary in Coulby Newham has been commended for embedding the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child throughout its policies, practice and culture

The UNICEF report on St Augustine’s says children understood that rights are inalienable, unconditional and universal, but that some children don’t have their rights met.

“Children, young people and adults collaborate to develop and maintain a school community based on equality, dignity, respect, non-discrimination and participation,” it says. “This includes learning and teaching in a way that respects the rights of both educators and learners and promotes wellbeing.

“Relationships at St Augustine’s are mutually respectful and caring. One child said, ‘It’s not like a school, we’re a family, there’s always a friend around to help.’

“Health and wellbeing are key drivers at St Augustine’s. Some groups of children and staff are Headstart trained and there is a weekly bereavement group where children can go to talk if they feel sad. A child said, ‘We can talk about mental health and what’s worrying us because we have a right to be safe and listened to.’

“Children unanimously agreed that they are treated fairly and quoted the example that if two children argued, staff would listen to both sides. A Year 6 child said, ‘People here focus on rights and respect and everyone is treated the same it doesn’t matter about their race or gender or anything else.’”

Mr Macaulay added: “The feedback in the report is fabulous and the real strength of what we’re doing is the way the children are driving everything.”

UNICEF outlined the steps St Augustine’s needs to take to earn its Gold standard, which the school has set its sights on winning within the next 12 to 18 months.

LENT – Live out the Call to Serve

28th February 2020Oliver Whittell

Click the image above to View Twitter Post Reflection, Day 1

Lent – what’s it all about?

Lent is the period of 40 days that takes place immediately before we celebrate Easter. This is a time that the Church has dedicated for us to think about how we can become more God-like in our approach. By that I mean it’s about thinking about the the choices we make and evaluating them using the teachings of Jesus as a guide to judge them. It’s about having a focus on our relationship with God and asking the questions:

  • Do we make time for God?
  • Do we treat others as God would want us to?
  • Do we behave to ourselves in a way that reflects we are God’s child and made in God’s image?

To help us do this we are recommended to do three things during Lent:

Pray
Fast
Give

Can we give more time each day to pray and spend time with God? Can we give 5 or 10 minutes to read a passage of scripture and think about what God is telling us through the passage? All relationships need to be worked on and prayer is the way we work at our relationship with God and keep it alive. It’s about giving time to talk and listen to God.

Fasting is usually associated with giving up some kind of food or cutting back on something as in a fasting diet like the 5:2 one. However here it could be about stopping or going without the things that could keep us from God. We can “fast” from negative behaviours that are unhelpful such as gossiping, swearing or complaining all the time. We could use it as a way of connecting with others for example cutting back on social media use, or messing with our mobiles and just be with the people who are in the room with us. There are many ways that we can fast. If we do choose to give up items of food, this can go hand in hand with the next lenten action of give.

Giving is about reaching out to others. This could be through giving to charity such as any savings you have made by fasting. It could be about volunteering or deciding each day you want to do something good to someone, finding little ways to do this.

If we start to do these things during Lent then by the time we get to Easter we will have grown to become a better version of ourselves. We are also actively living out Jesus’ call to serve as we become more outward focused and led by the teaching of Jesus. So this lent take some time to ask who is it that God wants you to be?

Coronavirus Precautionary Measures – Trinity Catholic College

25th February 2020Rebecca Chambers

Over the February half term holiday 36 pupils and 8 members of staff travelled to Verona in Northern Italy on a ski trip. As you might be aware some of Northern Italy has been affected by coronavirus.

The health and safety of our pupils is of paramount importance to us therefore we have taken the decision to close the college for a deep clean to ensure we take all precautions to limit the risk of infection, we will reopen on Monday 2nd March.

The Headteacher has decided, in discussion with the SLT and the CEO of the Trust to completely minimise possible spread of infection amongst families and close the college for the remainder of the week.

During this time, the college will be able to conduct a precautionary deep clean of the school buildings, and monitor the pupils health.

We appreciate that there will be many views on this action amongst parents, and hope that everyone understands the ongoing fluidity of the situation. There are a number of pupils and staff who have vulnerable family members and it is the college’s duty of care to put in place the most secure of measures to minimise any possible infection.

The staff, pupils and families of NPCAT are our main concern, and even though we understand the impact this may have on the education of the pupils, and disruption to working practice of parents, we believe this decision is justified.

NPCAT are working with relevant agencies in response to the potential risks reported across the UK as a consequence of hundreds of schools returning from Italy over the last few days of midterm.

We will ensure all parents and carers are updated regularly via email and further guidance is available on our website.

Academy Team Shortlisted For Public Sector Finance Honour

20th February 2020Michael McGeary

The team that brought together the finances of 26 schools as they formed one of the country’s biggest Catholic multi-academy trusts has been shortlisted for a prestigious award.

Nicholas Postgate Catholic Academy Trust (NPCAT) will be up against Staffordshire Police in the Finance Team of the Year – Local Services category at this year’s Public Finance Awards.

The five-strong NPCAT team, led by head of finance Lisa Marron, worked late nights and weekends to tackle the hugely complicated task of uniting four Catholic trusts across Teesside and part of North Yorkshire, along with two other primary schools.

NPCAT’s chief operating officer Jim Farquhar said the nomination was very well deserved.

“This is a prestigious national annual award event and to make it onto the shortlist is something that needs to be shouted from the rooftops,” said Mr Farquhar.

“I’m immensely proud of the whole team and this deserved recognition of the sheer hard work, including long hours and working weekends, that’s gone into getting the trust to where we are now in terms of good financial management.

“Their role involved ensuring strong controls and good financial practices were in place and working effectively, as well as building up relationships with school leaders to make sure there is a two-way dialogue around priorities.

“The sector is extremely demanding in terms of financial management and the oversight from the Education and Skills Funding Agency (ESFA) in particular.

“In a very short period, they were able to not just ensure compliance with the Academies Financial Handbook, Charity Commission and Companies Law Act requirements, but also demonstrate that procedures and practices were working effectively and being embedded.

“For all of that to happen in a year was such a wonderful achievement and they very much deserve this nomination.”

The Public Finance Awards focus specifically on the public sector and includes local government, the NHS, police, fire, civil service and the Ministry of Defence.

Lisa and the team – Angela Allen, Helen Dalby, Mel Barker and Sam Williams – will attend the ceremony and dinner at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London on Thursday April 23.

Mastering Maths In Shanghai

27th January 2020Michael McGeary

NPCAT’s curriculum standards lead Nicola Reed reflects on a two-week visit to China as part of the England-Shanghai Mathematics Teacher Exchange…

Since 2014, maths hubs and the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM) have been working together to develop approaches to mathematics mastery.

Mastering maths means pupils acquiring a deep, long-term, secure and adaptable understanding of the subject.

The phrase “teaching for mastery” describes the elements of classroom practice and school organisation that combine to give pupils the best chances of mastering maths.

Achieving mastery means acquiring a solid enough understanding of the maths that’s been taught to enable pupils to move on to more advanced material.

In 2016, I became a cohort 1 secondary mastery specialist through the NCETM programme.

As part of my role I was given the opportunity to apply for the England-Shanghai Mathematics Teacher Exchange.

The two-week trip consisted of one day at Shanghai Normal University with a welcome ceremony and a lecture by Professor Gu, followed by three days in a secondary school and one day in a primary school each week, as well as a lecture on the middle Sunday.

This was an amazing opportunity to observe in practice the inspiration behind the principles of Teaching for Mastery and learn about the Shanghai education system and culture.

In Shanghai, when teaching for mastery, children are do not passively accept abstract mathematical rules, but rather test, hypothesise, visualise, represent and reason about mathematics.

Each lesson clearly builds on the previous one – there is very little new knowledge within a lesson and there is clear emphasis on linking old knowledge and new knowledge, which develops fluency and encourages retention.

Teachers meticulously consider each part of the lesson, supported by their peers and leaders to deliver the most effective lessons they could.

A key distinction in each lesson was the use of specific and technical mathematical vocabulary to support teaching and learning. Language was not “simplified” to make learning “more accessible” to learners, rather, high expectations of learning and using mathematical terms correctly was promoted.

The Teacher Research Groups (TRGs) were used to critically analyse the impact of pedagogy. A culture of shared responsibility and critical evaluation were encouraged to improve pedagogy and ultimately to improve learning.

Regular TRGs allowed teachers to critically reflect on their own classes and year groups to consider what learning must come before and after the lesson they had observed. In doing so, teachers continued to develop coherent lessons and curriculum which allowed learning to be built upon from the first years to the final years of school.

In summary, though the Shanghai system is different to here in the United Kingdom, thus some systematic aspects cannot be replicated, there is a lot we can learn from mathematics pedagogy in Shanghai and that we could implement and embed into our lessons to improve the learning and outcomes of our students.

Children Inspired By Holocaust Survivor’s Moving Story

27th January 2020Michael McGeary

Children spoke of being inspired after a 93-year-old Holocaust survivor came to tell the moving story of how she left her family behind and fled Nazi persecution.

Gabriele Keenaghan visited St Alphonsus Catholic Primary School in North Ormesby, Middlesbrough, where her granddaughter Emily Smith teaches, ahead of Holocaust Memorial Day (Monday January 27).

Born in Vienna in 1926, the daughter of a Catholic mother and a Jewish father, Gabriele was brought up by her grandmother after her mother died when she was young.

Labelled as a “mischling” by the Nazis after the Anschluss on March 1928, when Austria was annexed by Hitler’s Germany, she was sent to a Jewish school and forced to wear a yellow Star of David at all times.

The infamous Kristallnacht (the night of the broken glass) – on the eve of Gabriele’s 12th birthday – saw windows smashed in synagogues and Jewish-owned businesses.

Fearing for Gabriele’s life, her grandmother reluctantly made plans for her to join 150 other children on a Kindertransport train to England in April 1929.

“In my mind I can still see my grandmother on the platform and every time I talk about it I get emotional,” said Gabriele.

“There were 150 children on the train and the Nazis were there with lists of people and we all had labels around our necks.

“The Nazis told the adults there had to be no emotional scenes – even though people were putting their children and grandchildren on the trains to they didn’t know where, not knowing whether they’d ever see them again.”

At the end of a 1,000-mile journey she stood alone on another platform in London’s Liverpool Street Station, before being met by a female member of the Catholic Committee for Refugees.

Gabriele spoke no English but quickly learned the language at a school run by the Sisters of Notre Dame in Ashford, Kent. After the war she trained as a teacher at Wynyard Hall and met and married a young flight sergeant. She was also reunited with her grandmother, who died in 1974.

Teaching is in the family DNA. Gabriele became a headteacher in Wallsend, her daughter, Pat, was headteacher of Sacred Heart Secondary School, in Redcar, and Emily started her teaching career at St Alphonsus in 2015.

“I don’t think I can put into words how proud of her I am,” said Emily. “It’s Holocaust Memorial Day later this month and we thought it would be good for her to talk to the key stage two children because they study that era within the history curriculum. We also have quite a few refugees in our school and it means a lot to them to hear this kind of story.”

Gabriele brought the British Empire Medal she was received from the Queen at Buckingham Palace in November for services to education to show the St Alphonsus children.

One of the pupils, Evangelina, said: “It was amazing, it means a lot that she’s been through so much but she’s still here making people smile and telling her story.”

“It was really inspiring,” added Lexi.

Gabriele said she loved speaking to the children.

“Their faces show surprise because they’ve never heard a story like this but they really listen and absorb it and have the intention that it will never happen in their lifetimes,” she said.

“Don’t forget that even since the Holocaust there have been many more genocides, so I’m not sure human beings have learned. We need to repeat the message until young people are aware that this kind of behaviour is never acceptable.”

🌿 Feast of St Augustine of Canterbury 🌿

Today, we celebrate St Augustine of Canterbury, the “Apostle to the English,” who brought the light of Christ to the people of England in the 6th century. 🙏

Sent by Pope Gregory the Great, St Augustine’s courage, faith and humility remind us that even in new and unfamiliar places, the love of God can transform hearts. 💛

Let us ask for his intercession to guide missionaries, strengthen our own witness to Christ and bring unity and peace to all communities. ✝️

📖✨ Feast of St Bede the Venerable ✨📖

Today, we celebrate St Bede, the “Father of English History,” whose life reminds us of the power of faith, study and prayer. A monk, scholar and teacher, St Bede devoted his life to understanding God’s truth and sharing it with the world.

🙏 Reflection:
St Bede teaches us that faith and intellect can go hand in hand. Through reading, writing and prayer, he showed that knowledge is a gift when used to glorify God and serve others.

📚💡 Let us pray today for wisdom, clarity and a heart open to God’s word, so that like St Bede, we may bring light to those around us.

“Better one little book with God’s grace than many without it.” – St Bede
