Outstanding Catholic Education: St Patrick’s Thornaby Achieves Top Marks

St Patrick’s Catholic Primary School in Thornaby, part of the Nicholas Postgate Catholic Academy Trust (NPCAT), is celebrating an exceptional achievement after being rated β€˜Outstanding’ across all areas in its latest Catholic Schools Inspection.

This incredible recognition reflects the dedication, faith and commitment of the entire St Patrick’s school community. Inspectors awarded the school a 1 (Outstanding) rating in overall effectiveness, Catholic life and mission, religious education and collective worship, highlighting its unwavering commitment to faith-based education.

A Testament to Excellence

The inspection report praised St Patrick’s for its inspirational leadership, inclusive and welcoming culture, and outstanding teaching standards.

Key highlights from the report include:

  • Inspirational Leadership – The executive headteacher and head of school were commended for their vision and drive in providing outstanding Catholic education.
  • Faith in Action – Pupils demonstrate deep knowledge of the lives of saints, Church rituals and scripture, with a strong emphasis on charity and community outreach.
  • Exemplary Behaviour – Inspectors highlighted the exceptional behaviour and attitudes of pupils, noting they feel valued, loved and cared for.
  • Community and Parish Links – The school’s strong relationships with parents, carers, parishes and NPCAT were recognised as a key strength.

Pupils at St Patrick’s live out the school’s mission, β€œSeek ye first the kingdom of God,” by actively supporting charities such as a local food bank, community garden, dementia hub, Macmillan Cancer Support, CAFODΒ and the British Legion. They also send Christmas cards to those living alone and visit residents in a nearby care home, reinforcing the school’s commitment to kindness and service.

A Proud Moment for NPCAT

NPCAT CEO Hugh Hegarty expressed immense pride in the school’s achievement, stating:

β€œThis outstanding result reflects not only the hard work and devotion of our school communities but also the grace and purpose at the heart of Catholic education. The commitment of our leaders, staff and governors to creating a faith-filled, nurturing environment where pupils thrive academically, spiritually and personally is truly inspiring.”

He also highlighted the invaluable role of the parish and praised the contribution of Father Pat O’Neill, whose guidance and support have strengthened the bond between faith and education.

A School Built on Generations of Faith and Commitment

St Patrick’s Thornaby Priest

In a letter to parents, executive head Mark Ryan and head of school James Conwell expressed their gratitude:

β€œThe report celebrates all that St Patrick’s parish and school community do together in bringing about the Kingdom of God among us. This success is built on generations of pupils, parents, parishioners, priests, staff and governors.”

Diocesan director of schools Kate Bailey and deputy director Martin Macaulay also acknowledged the school’s remarkable achievement, stating:

β€œThe inspection findings are a great testament to the hard work and dedication of all staff, in addition to the commitment of governors and trust officers. The comments from parents are a wonderful acknowledgment of the care and support offered to pupils and their families.”

Faith, Excellence and Community in Action

This clean sweep of β€˜Outstanding’ ratings is a reflection of the dedication, values and strong faith community that define St Patrick’s and NPCAT. The school’s commitment to providing a high-quality Catholic education ensures that every pupil grows academically, spiritually and personally.

NPCAT is proud to see another of its schools exemplify the very best in Catholic education, reinforcing the Trust’s mission to nurture faith, develop excellence and support thriving school communities.

Schools unite in tribute to the fallen

14th November 2024Michael McGeary

Schools throughout NPCAT paid their respects to the fallen as they gathered for the annual Remembrance commemorations.
As well as holding their individual events, representatives of schools came together at the trust’s headquarters, Postgate House, Middlesbrough.
They were led in prayer by Father Pat Keogh before CEO Hugh Hegarty gave a moving speech about the need for peace in our own communities.
β€œBy honouring the sacrifices made for freedom and peace, we affirm that these values are stronger than fear, stronger than hatred,” he said.
β€œWe, as a family, are called upon to be vigilant custodians of peace in our communities and our schools, to speak out against those who sow discord, and to lead by example with respect and compassion.
β€œThe courage we celebrate today is not just found in the past, but must also be carried forward by us in our words and our actions.
β€œAnd in the words of Martin Luther King Junior, β€˜Darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that. And hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that.’
β€œSo may we each carry that light forward, honouring those who have sacrificed for peace by working against forces that threaten it today.
β€œLet us renew our commitment to building a better future, rooted in peace, mutual respect and remembrance of those who have given their all. Together we remember and commit to fostering a world worthy of their legacy.”
Children led the singing, before the playing of the Last Post signalled the start of the two minutes’ silence.
NPCAT assistant CEO Jim Farquhar, a serving Royal Naval Reserve officer, was among those who laid wreaths in the trust’s remembrance garden.
