Head’s pride at leading ‘friendly, happy and safe’ school

18th September 2023Michael McGeary

A North Yorkshire school where pupils are “friendly, happy and safe” has been rated as good by Ofsted.

Inspectors said parents and carers are hugely positive about St Joseph’s Catholic Primary in Pickering and the care of the headteacher and school staff.

“Pupils are friendly, happy and feel safe in this school. Leaders strive to make the school a place where everyone can succeed,” the report says.

“Pupils enjoy learning from a wide range of extracurricular clubs. Activities such as boxercise, cooking and archery are well attended by all. Leaders encourage teachers to use the many opportunities in the local area to support the curriculum.

“Pupils behave well in lessons and around the school; the school is calm and orderly.
“All pupils know one another in this close school community. Pupils know to speak to adults should they have any concerns. They trust staff to listen to them if they have any worries.”

The school’s 87 pupils enjoy a wide range of school trips, including a visit to Dalby Forest and a steam train journey to Goathland.

Inspectors said supports pupils who join St Joseph’s in key stage 2 having had difficult educational experiences elsewhere exceptionally well.

“Their future educational opportunities are transformed,” they say.

St Joseph’s is one of 38 schools throughout Teesside and North Yorkshire, including the city of York, that make up Nicholas Postgate Postgate Catholic Academy Trust, which is also praised in the report.

“Leaders from the trust provide effective support to school leaders,” the inspectors say.

“The trust plays a valuable role in identifying and celebrating strengths while supporting areas which need further development.”

Safeguarding is effective, with staff having up-to-date training, and leaders follow up any concerns with appropriate and timely actions.

“They work effectively within the trust and with external agencies to ensure pupils and their families get the right support.

“Pupils are taught about keeping themselves safe, including online, but would like to learn more about how to look after their own mental health.”

Headteacher Gerard Eddy said he was proud to lead what he called a “special, warm and welcoming school”.

“I am glad this report reflects the hard work of all our school staff and governors,” he said.

“It also shows how we are blessed with wonderful support from our parents. We really are a family that cares deeply for one another.

“As soon as visitors set foot inside our school, they all say that they are struck by the calm and clearly very nurturing atmosphere.

“This was also remarked upon by both our visitors from Ofsted, who enjoyed seeing just how transformative a school St Joseph’s is.

“We found the Ofsted visit to be a positive experience and have already started work on the development points they gave us.”

CEO Hugh Hegarty praised the staff and governors of St Joseph’s for their unrelenting commitment to every child in the school.

Mr Hegarty said: “The report is an endorsement of all the work undertaken to ensure every pupil has a wonderfully rich curriculum and an opportunity to access a diverse range of enrichment opportunities within a faith environment.”

He also thanked the school leaders for their work and parents for all their support for the school.

“Pupils continue to be impacted by the fallout from the pandemic, and yet despite all the challenges, this group of young people have excelled and made great progress,” said headteacher Sharon Keelan-Bardsley.
“We are delighted for the significant numbers of pupils who have achieved all 8s and 9s, but also for those who have overcome adversity to perform at the highest level and achieve their goals.
“It is a privilege to work with young people who have such high aspirations and with a team of dedicated members of staff who care deeply about ensuring our young people complete Year 11 with the best life chances.
“Our pupils can now look to the future with confidence, and we are excited to welcome many of them back to study in our high-performing, values-driven sixth form.”
All Saints’ A level students are also celebrating another fantastic set of results and can now move on to the next stage of their lives with an excellent academic foundation.
There were some outstanding subject and individual outcomes. For example, everyone who studied further maths achieved an A*.
In drama, more than 70% of the cohort achieved an A or A* and in philosophy and fine art this was 60% and 63% respectively.
Many subject areas with large student numbers achieved excellent outcomes, including history, where 77% of the cohort achieved an A*-B, biology, where 69% achieved A*-B and psychology and English language with 73% and 70% respectively.
Eight students will take up places at Oxford and Cambridge, with several more deferring until next year.
The vast majority of our students have secured highly competitive university places and achieved some superb outcomes.
Our BTEC results are the best the school has ever achieved and without exception, our students achieved a merit or higher.

The students listed below are just a small sample of those who have attained at the highest level.

“We are proud of all of our students and recognise the fantastic progress they have made throughout their time at All Saints,” said Mrs Keelan-Bardsley.
“This has been an exceptional time for young people nationally and there has been much documented in the press about the challenges and disruption to their education.
“These include knowledge gaps due to Covid lockdowns, attendance issues due to the impact of new variants of Covid, industrial action across transport and education and significant mental health issues.
“This has been our experience and although we have done all we can to mitigate these challenges, it has been an extremely stressful time for this cohort of young people.
“The staff at All Saints have been tireless in their support of our students and their fantastic results are a result of a strong partnership between school, student and home.”

Deborah Law, headteacher of St Patrick’s Catholic College in Thornaby, said the school’s results are a testament to pupils’ resilience and dedication to their studies, despite the turbulent secondary education they encountered in their five years at school.
She said: “We are proud of pupils’ individual successes and due to their hard work, they will now have a variety of choices as they move on to their post-16 studies.
“Many pupils achieved above their targets due to their sheer effort, determination to succeed and the support and guidance from their teaching staff.
“The class of 2023 are an incredible and unique group of young people who will always be part of the St Patrick’s alumni, and we look forward to hearing about their further success in the future.
“If any Year 11 pupils are interested in continuing their post-16 education within our trust family, there are limited places available for September at Trinity Sixth Form – part of the Nicholas Postgate Catholic Academy Trust.
“Pupils can email [email protected] or [email protected] and someone will contact them to discuss their options.”

Important artwork goes on show at St Mary’s

1st August 2023Michael McGeary

A work by one of the most celebrated British artists of the 20th century has gone on display in a Middlesbrough primary school as part of a pioneering partnership with the town’s MIMA gallery.
Herring Gull, by acclaimed sculptor and printmaker Dame Elisabeth Frink (1930 to 1993), is inspiring pupils at St Mary’s Catholic Primary School in Grangetown to produce their own work with the help of local environmental artist Diane Watson.
The partnership between the gallery and the school is part of a wider collaboration between MIMA and the National Portrait Gallery that has led to a large-scale exhibition called “People Powered: Stories from the River Tees”.
MIMA is putting on a programme of events focusing on histories and folk tales exploring how the River Tees has shaped the region.
MIME learning curator Claire Pounder said: “Installing artwork from the Middlesbrough Collection in a local school is a historic moment for MIMA.
“This special partnership with the National Portrait Gallery has brought this vision to the forefront of the project and will see pupils working in collaboration with local artist Diane Watson, to discover the importance of the River Tees and its ecosystems.”
MIMA is one of five organisations that form the National Portrait Gallery’s offsite programme.
St Mary’s executive headteacher Anna McClurey said the school’s partnership with MIMA has grown over the last five years.
“Our love of art and learning together is at the heart of this new work and will help us further understand the world we live in,” she said.
“This is a great moment for both our teachers and pupils to work alongside an artist and work in collaboration on a new body of artwork.”
Frink was especially well known for her sculptures of animals, particularly birds and horses.
Herring Gull, which belongs to the Middlesbrough Collection, was printed in 1974 for her Seabirds exhibition.
Discussions about Herring Gull are being used to guide pupils through the story of the river.
Diane, who is based in Seaton Carew, raises awareness of the scale of plastic waste through her sculptures, installations and surface designs, as well as through her collaborations with direct action groups.
She is using her environmental art practice to explore biodiversity and ecosystems using the power of creativity and imagination.
The final work will be displayed at MIMA as part of the exhibition.
The National Portrait Gallery’s Inspiring People initiative is a £35.5m transformation of the London venue that includes a comprehensive re-display of its collection and a major refurbishment.
It also includes the gallery’s most extensive programme of activities nationwide, with plans to engage audiences onsite, locally, regionally and online.
“People Powered: Stories from the River Tees” features new commissions by local artists alongside images from the National Portrait Gallery Collection and works from the Middlesbrough Collection.
The exhibition is now on and runs until January 7 2024.

Trinity pupils serve up fine-dining experience for lucky guests

1st August 2023Michael McGeary

Pupils at a Middlesbrough school put on a sumptuous fine-dining experience for parents and special guests after completing a special six-week training programme.
Seven Year 10 pupils at Trinity Catholic College were selected for the hospitality and catering course, which was overseen by Paul O’Hara, who worked in Michelin-starred kitchens before joining Nicholas Postgate Catholic Academy Trust (NPCAT) as executive chef last year.
Four pupils focused on putting together a delicious three-course meal in the kitchen, while the other three formed a front-of-house hospitality team, welcoming guests and serving them throughout the evening.
“We looked for pupils who have aspirations to go into this sort of work,” said Paul. “The kitchen group learned how to prepare the starter, main course and dessert and how the kitchen runs.
“The front-of-house team learned how to take orders, how to set the table up and how to meet, seat and greet our guests and then take their orders and bring them to the kitchen.”

The big test came with the dinner for 60 guests in Trinity’s recently opened Martha’s Kitchen dining hall. They included parents, members of NPCAT’s senior leadership team and representatives from the other secondary schools within the trust.
They chose from a starter of Mac ‘n’ Cheese Fritters or a Ham Hock Terrine with Piccalilli and Toasted Sourdough, a main course of Herb-Fed Chicken Breast with Bacon, Peas and Potato Gratin or North Sea Fishcake, Soft Poached Hen’s Egg and Warm Tartare Sauce.
For dessert, there was a choice of Sticky Toffee Pudding, Butterscotch Sauce with Vanilla Ice Cream or Eton Mess.
“Because it was a choice menu on the night, none of us knew what was going to happen,” said Paul.
“It was challenging, but that’s what I wanted, to show what they could accomplish if they put in the time and effort to learn and prepare properly. It was stressful at times, but we got there in the end.
“They learned real life skills and had a first taste of a real kitchen and a real working environment. It’s not like a cookery class at school. Anything could happen in the kitchen that day.
“The skills they have come away with will boost their confidence because they had to work as a team, relying on others they might not have spoken to in school before. It will also be good for their CVs that they have already had some work experience.”

Paul called in an old friend to help train the front-of-house team, Ben Hunt, a former restaurant manager at the Five Red Star Rockliffe Hall Hotel.
Ben, who now works for the Great North Air Ambulance (GNAA), gave up an hour of his time every week to come in and help. There was a display and a talk about the GNAA’s work on the night and guests were invited to give a donation if they wished to.

The event was a collaboration between NPCAT Catering and NPCAT FutureProof Careers.
The trust’s head of careers, Lisa Lindo, said: “This fantastic experience brought so many benefits to our pupils, including self-confidence, resilience and team building.
“It will also help them if they wish to move into careers in the hospitality sector in the future.”
The training was piloted at Trinity but Paul hopes to roll it out to the other five secondaries in NPCAT, which runs 38 schools across Teesside and North Yorkshire, including the city of York.

✨ Feast of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary ✨

“Blessed is she who believed that the Lord would fulfill His promises to her.” – Luke 1:45

Today, we celebrate Mary’s visit to her cousin Elizabeth, a moment of joy, faith and charity. In her humility, Mary brought Christ to others even before He was born. Her yes to God reminds us to share His love with those around us.

Let us follow Mary’s example by carrying Christ to our neighbours, offering encouragement and rejoicing in God’s blessings together. 💛

🌿 Feast of St Augustine of Canterbury 🌿

Today, we celebrate St Augustine of Canterbury, the “Apostle to the English,” who brought the light of Christ to the people of England in the 6th century. 🙏

Sent by Pope Gregory the Great, St Augustine’s courage, faith and humility remind us that even in new and unfamiliar places, the love of God can transform hearts. 💛

Let us ask for his intercession to guide missionaries, strengthen our own witness to Christ and bring unity and peace to all communities. ✝️

✨LOURDES PILGRIMAGE ✨

✈️🙏 Representatives from right across the #NPCATFamily are making the annual pilgrimage to Lourdes this week to embark on a truly special spiritual journey. 💙

Every year, millions of pilgrims flock to this holy site seeking solace, healing and hope. Together, staff and pupils will be on hand to help those in need, join in prayer and make memories to last a life time. This week, we join thousands of young people from around the world in prayer, service and friendship at this very special place where Our Lady appeared to St Bernadette. 🌹✨

Together, we’ll walk in faith, deepen our love for Christ and open our hearts to the message of Lourdes: “Do whatever He tells you” (John 2:5). 💒✝️💜

Please keep us in your prayers as we carry with us the intentions of our families, friends and school community. 🕊️💛

📖✨ Feast of St Bede the Venerable ✨📖

Today, we celebrate St Bede, the “Father of English History,” whose life reminds us of the power of faith, study and prayer. A monk, scholar and teacher, St Bede devoted his life to understanding God’s truth and sharing it with the world.

🙏 Reflection:
St Bede teaches us that faith and intellect can go hand in hand. Through reading, writing and prayer, he showed that knowledge is a gift when used to glorify God and serve others.

📚💡 Let us pray today for wisdom, clarity and a heart open to God’s word, so that like St Bede, we may bring light to those around us.

“Better one little book with God’s grace than many without it.” – St Bede
