Leaders’ pride as St Peter’s is praised as β€˜beacon of hope’

29th February 2024Michael McGeary

Inspectors have described a school as a β€œbeacon of hope for so many in the community” in a glowing report written on behalf of Bishop Terry.

The Catholic Schools Inspectorate (CSI) rated St Peter’s Catholic College in South Bank as outstanding for Catholic life and mission and good for both Religious Education and collective worship.

The report said: β€œThere is a true family feel within the school community. Leaders are inspirational role models for staff, students and families, having created a genuine, authentic vision for Catholic education.

β€œCatholic life and mission is the beating heart of the school, which has led to substantive, transformative change across all aspects of school life.

β€œThere is strong evidence of a highly effective collaboration and supportive relationship with the Nicholas Postgate Catholic Academy Trust (NPCAT), which has led to a positive impact upon the culture of St Peter’s.

β€œStudents are proud to attend St Peter’s; they feel valued, loved and unique; they know they matter.”

The report follows an Ofsted inspection in November 2022 in which St Peter’s was judged to be good in every category.

Headteacher Stephanie Garthwaite was delighted with this latest validation.

β€œI am incredibly proud of all of our wonderful pupils and staff and the journey they have been on over the last four years,” she said.

β€œIt was inspiring to see our tenacity, drive and commitment to Catholic education was finally recognised as our pupils and staff shone throughout the two days.

β€œThe three inspectors were able to live and breathe the mission statement of St Peter’s, as we all do every day, and they were blown away by their interactions with pupils.”

In a joint letter to parents and carers, Mrs Garthwaite and executive head Michael Burns spoke of being β€œfilled with pride”.

They said: β€œAt St Peter’s, we take pride and work hard to create a family atmosphere in school, where all children are known and loved by God. Catholic inspectors acknowledged the strong commitment to Catholic Social Teaching.

β€œWe feel proud of the work from all our staff, leaders and governors. Equally, the work of the trust is vital to our school community, working as one family.

β€œThe school can only be recognised for these achievements through the support and dedication of parents, carers, pupils and the wider community.

β€œWe would like to thank you all for ensuring your children live out our school mission and contribute fully to the Catholic life of our school.”

St Peter’s, which celebrated its 80th birthday in 2022, has benefitted from a major investment programme, including new sport and arts facilities, an external facelift and a Virtual Reality suite, which inspectors mentioned in their report.

They also praise the school’s contribution to the CAUSE Christmas hamper campaign and participation in the Flame Catholic youth event, the visit of St Bernadette’s relics and a growing involvement in the annual Lourdes pilgrimage.

β€œStudents are exceptionally proud to attend St Peter’s,” the inspectors said. β€œThey feel a part of the school’s long, rich history and have the desire to be a part of the school’s future.”

Head’s vow after outstanding Ofsted report

9th January 2024Michael McGeary

The headteacher of an NPCAT school judged by Ofsted to be outstanding in all areas has pledged to continue striving to ensure its children benefit from an education as good as anywhere else in the country.
Inspectors say St Mary’s Catholic Primary in Grangetown is β€œa beacon of aspiration in the community,” adding: β€œThe school’s ethos of love underpins everything it does.”
Delighted executive headteacher Anna McClurey says the school’s success is a real team effort and thanked pupils, families, staff, governors and the trust.
β€œWe couldn’t have achieved this amazing recognition without our parents, carers and families,” Mrs McClurey said.
β€œWe would like to thank them and their fantastic children for the unrelenting support they have shown to St Mary’s and the changes we have embraced.
β€œWe are extremely proud of everything we have been able to achieve at St Mary’s and with their help we look forward to going from strength to strength.
β€œI would like to give enormous thanks to our team of dedicated staff and leaders, who work tirelessly to give the very best to the children in our care.
β€œIt’s also important to acknowledge the skill and commitment of our governors and support of the trust, who do so much to support everything we’re trying to do here.”
In its glowing report for the 218-pupil school, Ofsted said: β€œPupils have consistently positive attitudes towards their learning. They are polite and respectful learners. Pupils participate in lessons with enthusiasm.
β€œPupils’ behaviour is exemplary. There are clear and high expectations of behaviour in place. Pupils know, understand and abide by the school’s behaviour routines.”
Inspectors praised the wide range of after-school clubs and trips on offer and described the curriculum as β€œincredibly ambitious”.
β€œThe school ensures that pupils have an in-depth understanding of how to keep mentally healthy.
β€œMembers of the local governing board have a clear understanding of their roles and responsibilities.
β€œThey recognise that the strength of all leaders, including the executive headteacher, subject leaders and trust leaders, contributes hugely to the outstanding education on offer.”
Provision for pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) is described as β€œexcellent”.
Mrs McClurey, who is also executive headteacher of St Pius X Catholic Primary in Park End, said pupils were a credit to the school, their families and to the Grangetown community throughout the inspection.
β€œWe are incredibly proud of our inclusive and vibrant school, where all children thrive,” she said.
And she promised: β€œEven though the report identifies no areas for improvement, we will never stop trying to get better.
β€œWe aim to ensure the children of Grangetown benefit from a quality of education that’s every bit as good as that on offer anywhere in the country.
β€œWe pledge to continue helping all our pupils fulfil their potential, to drive forward standards and to ensure the best for our pupils every day of their school lives.”
Trust CEO Mr Hegarty praised Mrs McClurey and the St Mary’s staff for what he described as a β€œmagnificent achievement”.
β€œI would particularly reflect on the climate for learning which has been developed under her leadership at the school and embraced by all staff and is so valued by every pupil.
β€œThis is so difficult to achieve and apply consistently, whereby every pupil is acknowledged as an individual made in the image and likeness of God and has ambition and a deep sense of their ability to achieve.”

Inspectors praise welcoming school at β€˜heart of the community’

5th December 2023Michael McGeary

A β€œsmall, welcoming school at the heart of the community” has been warmly praised by inspectors who deemed it to be good overall and good in all areas.
Welcoming the glowing Ofsted report, Headteacher Gerard Eddy said he was β€œincredibly proud” of the whole community at St Benedict’s Catholic Primary School in Ampleforth, North Yorkshire.
β€œThis is a small, welcoming school at the heart of its community,” the Ofsted report said. β€œThe school builds trusting relationships with parents and carers.
β€œIt celebrates pupils for who they are and what they achieve. Pupils develop the confidence and resilience they need to take their next steps in education.
β€œThe school has high aspirations for all pupils. It expects them to achieve well. Pupils enjoy their learning. Pupils are proud of the work they produce.
β€œThis is a calm and orderly school. It is also a friendly and happy school. Pupils form strong friendships. They cooperate with each other and show kindness and respect to all.”
St Benedict’s has 78 pupils aged from three to 11 and joined NPCAT last year.
Mr Eddy said it’s a pleasure to be part of such a happy and hardworking school where pupils are the focus of everything they do.
β€œSt Benedict’s is such a special school community,” he said. β€œI am incredibly proud of the work that is done by the whole school community.
β€œStaff and governors care for and love the school and are committed to providing our children with the best possible education.
β€œAt the core of everything we do here at St Benedict’s are the pupils. Our inspectors rightly recognised and praised them as being confident, kind, thoughtful and happy.
β€œI adore working at St Benedict’s. Every day I see the close bonds that exist between the staff and pupils and the respect they have for one another.
β€œI am so pleased for our parents and the wider community. Their support, care and encouragement for the staff and pupils helps to create this wonderful community that exists at St Benedict’s.”
NPCAT CEO Hugh Hegarty said: β€œThis recognition of the current provision within our Ampleforth school is a further example of how NPCAT continues to support our rural schools in these significantly challenging times.
β€œThe trust’s support at all levels is deeply appreciated by the community, school leadership and governors as we continue to build on the current rich provision of Catholic and indeed Christian education across North Yorkshire.”
Ofsted said the school gives children many opportunities to develop their talents, taking part in plays and attending clubs including sport, gardening eco-warriors and capoeira Brazilian dancing.
Children regularly raise funds for charity and have recently enjoyed trips to places including York Mosque and Eden Camp Modern History Museum.
Just a few days after Ofsted said goodbye to St Benedict’s, the school welcomed the Catholic Schools Inspectorate visit on behalf of the Diocese of Middlesbrough.
Their report said: β€œSt Benedict’s is a confident, happy, Catholic community, working in enthusiastic partnership with others.
β€œPupils are happy and their behaviour and attitude to learning is consistently a high standard.
β€œAll members of staff are positive and confident role models. They work together to care for pupils and families and provide a good level of pastoral support.
β€œThe headteacher, governors and staff enthusiastically articulate the Catholic mission of the school and are dedicated to ensuring continual improvement.”
They said membership of NPCAT is having a positive impact on the school’s capacity to continue to grow and improve.

Head’s joy at β€˜happy, caring’ school’s glowing Ofsted report

19th October 2023Michael McGeary

A headteacher has spoken of her pride and delight after Ofsted graded her school good overall and good in all areas.

Inspectors who visited St Mary’s Catholic Primary School in Richmond found a β€œcaring community” where children have everything they need to flourish.

The report says: β€œPupils behave well and feel safe. They are well cared for by the adults, who know them well. When pupils join the school, they quickly become part of a caring community.

β€œLeaders have high expectations for pupils’ achievement. This starts in the early years, where the curriculum has been well thought through to support pupils to learn. By the end of key stage 2, pupils have the skills that help them to be ready to move to secondary education.

Headteacher Fran Mackle said she couldn’t be prouder of St Mary’s children, families and governors.

β€œWe are truly blessed to be part of such a wonderful community,” she said. β€œI admire every member of my staff team as they always, without fail, put the children at the centre of everything they do.

β€œIt’s a real pleasure to work alongside such dedicated, motivated and highly skilled people. Our parents and governors are a great support and the school wouldn’t be the wonderful place it is without them.

β€œOne of my main aims is to establish a healthy workplace culture where the emotional health and wellbeing of staff is recognised and valued. Mental health and wellbeing of both the staff and children alike is a key priority in everyday life at St Mary’s.

β€œWe are very proud of our new curriculum and the high expectations we all have for our children.

β€œWe have a wonderful parish priest, Father John Bane, who fully embraces school life.

β€œWe’re also very lucky to be the feeder school to the Ofsted outstanding St Francis Xavier School in Richmond, with our children gaining top category places in the admission process.”

St Mary’s, which is in Cross Lane, became part of NPCAT in September 2022.

CEO Hugh Hegarty further endorsed the leadership of Miss Mackle and her team.
β€œThe support from the parish and community is a key strength of this beautiful school,” he said.

β€œSt Mary’s and its sister school on the same site, SFX,Β  afford parents the option for a seamless transition from primary into an outstanding secondary school.

β€œThese pathways are so important and having them in Richmond is why places at St Mary’s are so sought after.”

Ofsted says St Mary’s 171 pupils are proud of their work to support others, such as creating their own small food bank, and enjoy after-school clubs such as archery, dodgeball, football and dancing.

They also take on responsibilities as eco-warriors, school councillors and members of the Mini Vinnies group, who put their faith into action in their community.

β€œPupils feel safe and are happy here. They trust the adults in school to help them. They understand how leaders and staff expect them to behave. They are highly respectful of each other and of adults. This makes the school a calm and orderly place.

β€œArrangements for safeguarding are effective. Leaders and staff know pupils well. They work closely with pupils, and their families, to check on and look after their wellbeing.”

Miss Mackle added: β€œMy professional aspiration has always been to secure excellent outcomes for all children. To achieve this, a key priority is to focus on developing high-quality teaching and learning, ensuring all children receive the education they deserve.

β€œI will remain focused on what matters most. For me, that must be the children whose parents entrust them into our care.”

Head’s pride at leading β€˜friendly, happy and safe’ school

18th September 2023Michael McGeary

A North Yorkshire school where pupils are β€œfriendly, happy and safe” has been rated as good by Ofsted.

Inspectors said parents and carers are hugely positive about St Joseph’s Catholic Primary in Pickering and the care of the headteacher and school staff.

β€œPupils are friendly, happy and feel safe in this school. Leaders strive to make the school a place where everyone can succeed,” the report says.

β€œPupils enjoy learning from a wide range of extracurricular clubs. Activities such as boxercise, cooking and archery are well attended by all. Leaders encourage teachers to use the many opportunities in the local area to support the curriculum.

β€œPupils behave well in lessons and around the school; the school is calm and orderly.
β€œAll pupils know one another in this close school community. Pupils know to speak to adults should they have any concerns. They trust staff to listen to them if they have any worries.”

The school’s 87 pupils enjoy a wide range of school trips, including a visit to Dalby Forest and a steam train journey to Goathland.

Inspectors said supports pupils who join St Joseph’s in key stage 2 having had difficult educational experiences elsewhere exceptionally well.

β€œTheir future educational opportunities are transformed,” they say.

St Joseph’s is one of 38 schools throughout Teesside and North Yorkshire, including the city of York, that make up Nicholas Postgate Postgate Catholic Academy Trust, which is also praised in the report.

β€œLeaders from the trust provide effective support to school leaders,” the inspectors say.

β€œThe trust plays a valuable role in identifying and celebrating strengths while supporting areas which need further development.”

Safeguarding is effective, with staff having up-to-date training, and leaders follow up any concerns with appropriate and timely actions.

β€œThey work effectively within the trust and with external agencies to ensure pupils and their families get the right support.

β€œPupils are taught about keeping themselves safe, including online, but would like to learn more about how to look after their own mental health.”

Headteacher Gerard Eddy said he was proud to lead what he called a β€œspecial, warm and welcoming school”.

β€œI am glad this report reflects the hard work of all our school staff and governors,” he said.

β€œIt also shows how we are blessed with wonderful support from our parents. We really are a family that cares deeply for one another.

β€œAs soon as visitors set foot inside our school, they all say that they are struck by the calm and clearly very nurturing atmosphere.

β€œThis was also remarked upon by both our visitors from Ofsted, who enjoyed seeing just how transformative a school St Joseph’s is.

β€œWe found the Ofsted visit to be a positive experience and have already started work on the development points they gave us.”

CEO Hugh Hegarty praised the staff and governors of St Joseph’s for their unrelenting commitment to every child in the school.

Mr Hegarty said: β€œThe report is an endorsement of all the work undertaken to ensure every pupil has a wonderfully rich curriculum and an opportunity to access a diverse range of enrichment opportunities within a faith environment.”

He also thanked the school leaders for their work and parents for all their support for the school.

β€œPupils continue to be impacted by the fallout from the pandemic, and yet despite all the challenges, this group of young people have excelled and made great progress,” said headteacher Sharon Keelan-Bardsley.
β€œWe are delighted for the significant numbers of pupils who have achieved all 8s and 9s, but also for those who have overcome adversity to perform at the highest level and achieve their goals.

All Saints’ A level students are also celebrating another fantastic set of results and can now move on to the next stage of their lives with an excellent academic foundation.
There were some outstanding subject and individual outcomes. For example, everyone who studied further maths achieved an A*.
In drama, more than 70% of the cohort achieved an A or A* and in philosophy and fine art this was 60% and 63% respectively.
Many subject areas with large student numbers achieved excellent outcomes, including history, where 77% of the cohort achieved an A*-B, biology, where 69% achieved A*-B and psychology and English language with 73% and 70% respectively.
Eight students will take up places at Oxford and Cambridge, with several more deferring until next year.
The vast majority of our students have secured highly competitive university places and achieved some superb outcomes.
Our BTEC results are the best the school has ever achieved and without exception, our students achieved a merit or higher.

β€œThis has been an exceptional time for young people nationally and there has been much documented in the press about the challenges and disruption to their education.
β€œThese include knowledge gaps due to Covid lockdowns, attendance issues due to the impact of new variants of Covid, industrial action across transport and education and significant mental health issues.
β€œThis has been our experience and although we have done all we can to mitigate these challenges, it has been an extremely stressful time for this cohort of young people.
β€œThe staff at All Saints have been tireless in their support of our students and their fantastic results are a result of a strong partnership between school, student and home.”

Impressive stories as SFX pupils celebrate

1st September 2023Michael McGeary

Head of school Jacqueline Prime said it was wonderful to see St Francis Xavier, Richmond, pupils’ hard work being rewarded in their exam results.
“I am delighted with all this cohort of students has achieved,” she said. “They have been a great year group to work with and it’s fantastic to see so much hard work and determination being rewarded.
“Staff and students, along with parents and carers all deserve credit for what has been achieved.
“Approximately 40 per cent of all grades achieved were at 7 or above and these were well distributed across all subjects.
“There are many impressive individual stories. Some students have achieved far beyond expectations academically, while others have shown real determination to achieve in adversity.
“While studying for their GCSEs, a significant number of these students managed to excel in sporting activities, engage successfully in music and drama performances or continue with volunteering work in the local community and beyond.
“They are to be commended for being able to achieve that all-important healthy balance.
“As a staff, we are thankful for the time we have been able to spend with these students during their years at St Francis Xavier School and we wish them happiness and success in their futures.”

✨ Feast of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary ✨

β€œBlessed is she who believed that the Lord would fulfill His promises to her.” – Luke 1:45

Today, we celebrate Mary’s visit to her cousin Elizabeth, a moment of joy, faith and charity. In her humility, Mary brought Christ to others even before He was born. Her yes to God reminds us to share His love with those around us.

Let us follow Mary’s example by carrying Christ to our neighbours, offering encouragement and rejoicing in God’s blessings together. πŸ’›
